What does Giclee, Hand Embellished and Original mean?

Giclee

Giclée (pronounced ZHEE-clay) is the French term for "fine spray." A giclée print is created with digital printers using four tiny ink jets that spray more than 4 million microscopic water-based colored ink droplets per second onto a sheet of fine art paper or canvas, spinning on a drum at the rate of 250 inches per second.
Precise computer calculations control these ink jets to produce over 500 shades of dense, water-based ink. A computer scans the artist's original work to control the jets -- no printing film or plates are involved. The final product is a lush, vibrant, and velvety-looking art print; one that has the feel of a watercolor, and the clarity of an original painting.

Hand Embellished

When a piece is produced, it is placed alongside the original for the image to be highlighted in certain places, under the direction of the artist, using inks, hand-applied paints, or gold and silver leaf. This is carried out to enhance the piece and bring it closer to the original.

Original Print/Etching

An original print is a work of art created by hand and printed by hand, either by the artist ir by a professional assistant ( often called an artisan), from plate, block, stone or stencil that has been hand created by the artist for the sole purpose of producing the desired image.

Lithography

In offset lithography, which depends on photographic processes, flexible aluminum, polyester, mylar or paper printing plates are used in place of stone tablets. Modern printing plates have a brushed or roughened texture and are covered with a photosensitive emulsion. A photographic negative of the desired image is placed in contact with the emulsion and the plate is exposed to ultraviolet light. After development, the emulsion shows a reverse of the negative image, which is thus a duplicate of the original (positive) image. The image on the plate emulsion can also be created through direct laser imaging in a CTP (computer-to-plate) device called a platesetter. The positive image is the emulsion that remains after imaging. For many years, chemicals have been used to remove the non-image emulsion, but now plates are available that do not require chemical processing.

Serigraph

Screen printing is a printing technique that uses a woven mesh to support an ink-blocking stencil. The attached stencil forms open areas of mesh that transfer ink as a sharp-edged image onto a substrate. A roller or squeegee is moved across the screen stencil, forcing or pumping ink past the threads of the woven mesh in the open areas.

Screen printing is also a stencil method of print making in which a design is imposed on a screen of silk or other fine mesh, with blank areas coated with an impermeable substance, and ink is forced through the mesh onto the printing surface. It is also known as "silk screening" or "serigraphy".

What does "Size" mean?

"Size" is only the size of the image in inches. this does not include any extra size obtained from the mount and/or the frame. Please call us if you require specific size's as we can give you more accurate details.  A limited edition print is a reproduction of an original painting which is numbered and signed by the artist. The limited number of pieces in the edition as well as the artist's signature yields a collectible piece of art.

What is an "Artist Proof" or A/P?

Also known as A/P. Prints outside the edition that are equal in quality to the edition and signed as Artist Proof or A/P by the artist.  They are traditionally the property of the artist and usually limited to 10-15% of the edition.

Why are limited edition prints more expensive than "open" prints?

An open edition print is printed on a lighter weight paper stock. It is usually smaller in size than the limited edition, and is also not signed, numbered, or personally inspected by the artist. For these reasons, the open edition is less expensive than a limited edition print.

What is a Remarque?

A small drawing, painting or sketch added to the border or image of a print. It increases the value of a print because only a certain number of prints are remarqued.
