View Winston's Artwork Jack Winston is one of the most influential figures in the School of Oxford, a group of local artists who have come together through their shared love of the Romantic movement. Each artist in the School has his or her own preoccupations, but all place traditional artistic skills and a love of vivid natural beauty at the core of their practice.

Winston’s painting reveals an enduring preoccupation with the ocean, hinging on his brilliant ability to capture the subtle, diffuse light of the British coastline. This sensitivity is the result of Winston’s lifelong fascination with ocean currents, seafaring, and traditional fishing communities. His artistic style was forged through long periods spent walking the coastline and painting aboard a borrowed boat.

Winston says these intense periods of creativity reawakened a deep sympathy with the moving ocean which had been latent in him since boyhood. His main inspirations are John Cotman and J.M.W Turner, and their influence is obvious in the gentle luminosity of colour Winston brings to his work.
